A Dirty Pretty Theatre & Critical Stages Production
Thérèse Raquin
Adapted from the Emile Zola novel by Gary Abrahams.
An exquisite adaptation of a masterpiece of French literature.
Causing great controversy when the novel was first published over 150 years ago, Thérèse Raquin is Emile Zola’s superb examination of corrupted morals. Set in the notoriously dingy backstreets of late 19th Century Paris, this carnal and corset-filled thriller will have you on the edge of your seat.
Thérèse lives a life of servitude, married to her sickly cousin in a loveless, arranged marriage. But her melancholy is marred by the arrival of Laurent, her husband’s friend, with whom she begins a passionate, feverish affair.
This stunning and critically acclaimed production was nominated for six Green Room Awards across categories of design, direction and performance. Director Gary Abrahams has crafted an original and unique adaptation of this renowned classic work of French literature, bringing to the production a heightened sense of drama and a raw and immediate passion. Thérèse Raquin is an affecting, visually splendid, emotional rollercoaster ride.
Recommended for ages 16+. Contains strong language & adult themes.

Beautifully paced and engaging theatre… Directed with skill and style, compressing the terrific density of Zola’s novel into a stark but subtle drama.” – The Age
