ABOUT THE SHOW
When a white woman flees her Sydney life, she is surprised to find herself sitting with a black woman crocheting a beanie – in Alice Springs. It’s a long way from the big smoke for Nessa Tavistock, who inadvertently becomes part of the Beanie Festival, a pilgrimage for women as diverse and distant as the Anangu and Tjanpi weavers and Western women from across the world. For Nessa’s happenstance friend, Tilly Napuljari, meeting the festival deadline for her new creation offers both women a chance to weave a relationship based on shared secrets, struggles and successes. With time and talk, they realise that despite their differences in language, surroundings and upbringing, they are not so different after all.
In making their beanie together, Tilly and Nessa’s stories become entwined and made into a thing of beauty – row by row, colour by colour, yarn by yarn.
