“Amani Al-Khatahtbeh is changing the conversation for the women of Islam.” The New York Times
At just seventeen, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh founded the blog MuslimGirl to give Muslim women a voice. Now twenty-four, she discusses the weight of representing a diverse culture with unapologetic honesty.
Smashing stereotypes
Growing up Muslim in post 9/11 America, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh felt marginalised and neglected. As a response to her growing Muslim faith, she created a website called MuslimGirl, and as editor-in-chief, transformed the site from a part-time passion project to a full-time social movement.
Unravelling the myth of the submissive Muslim woman, Amani shares her own experiences and publishes other young female writers on diverse topics: politics, periods, racism, and even gay imams. With a sharp and honest voice, her work brings a fresh perspective on the life of Muslim women.
Session Partner: University of New South Wales
