“This is a unique story, the kind of story that could only ever take place in a place like Wollongong. Or Port Macquarie. Or Randwick.
Or Burwood. Or Warringah…”

version 1.0 is renowned for making witty and incisive theatre that engages with contemporary political and social issues. In The Table of Knowledge, the company turns its forensic theatrical vision to the so-called ‘sex for development’ corruption scandal that engulfed Wollongong City Council in 2008.

Exposing sexual obsessions, envelopes full of cash and a secret cabal of powerful men that met regularly around a plastic table outside a local kebab shop, the script was developed almost entirely from the actual words of the central characters. A universal story based on real events, The Table of Knowledge is a hilarious and utterly compelling interrogation of power, corruption and good governance in contemporary Australia.

“The play is often wildly funny, so improbable is the mire of greed and lechery, and yet every laugh is
another nail in the coffin of the council’s probity… This is vital, engaging theatre that serves an invaluable function in helping to purge the canker.”
