“MUSICAL THEATRE DOESN’T COME ANY BETTER THAN THIS… A PRODUCTION IN WHICH I SIMPLY CAN’T FIND A FAULT.” STAGE WHISPERS
Hey big spender…
Canberra Theatre Centre is proud to announce the return of smash-hit professional musicals for the Nation’s Capital with three-time Helpmann Award Winning production Sweet Charity this coming February.
This high-octane musical tells the story of dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine and her co-workers. Each day, Charity dances with man after man in order to earn a living, all the while dreaming of the day she will be taken away from her sordid dance hall existence and rescued by a respectable man who falls madly in love with her.
Originally debuting on Broadway in 1966, the memorable music score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields contains major hits like Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, There’s Got To Be Something Better Than This and The Rhythm of Life. Neil Simon’s razor-sharp script lifts the veil on the exquisitely agony of living on the under-side of life.
Australian actor, Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins), stars as Charity Hope Valentine, a performance that won her a Helpmann Award for the Best Female Performer in a Musical, described as a ‘radiant, endearing performance; sensationally sung and danced, with knockout comic timing’.
Sweet Charity’s high-energy choreography and sharp-witted dialogue makes it the perfect night of musical theatre for adults.
Based on an original screenplay by Federico Fellini, Tulio Pinelli and Ennio Plaiano. Produced for the Broadway Stage by Fryer, Carr and Harris. Conceived, staged and choreographed by Bob Fosse.
