Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, this contemporary English-language opera-performance in the round, also in the sand, confronts themes of climate emergency with humour and power.
Viewed from the balcony above in a playful transformation of Sydney Town Hall, the stage is a sandy beach upon which holidaymakers sunbake and sing gentle elegies about their lives and the changes they observe in the natural world around them.
Written and created by Lithuanian artists Rugil? Barzdžiukait?, Vaiva Grainyt?, and Lina Lapelyt?, Sun & Sea is not didactic – in this apocalypse story, the world doesn’t end with a bang, but with a long, lazy afternoon whiled away at the beach.
