A captivating tale of three generations of Koori women
In 1950s Menzies era Victoria, three generations of Koori women live in a shack on a flood-prone riverbank on the outskirts of a small country town. For Nan, even life on ‘the Flats’ represents progress of a kind, but daughter Gladys has bigger ambitions – a real house and a real job for her own daughter Dolly. When Gladys buys the Encyclopedia Britannica from a city salesman to improve Dolly’s chances, their lives take an unexpected and challenging turn. Set against the Queen’s visit of 1954, this tender, funny play celebrates the transformative power of learning and the fierce optimism of these women in conservative, white Australia. Rainbow’s End is truly a feel-good night at the theatre.
