MIES JULIE

SOUTH AFRICA

WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY Yael Farber
BASED ON August Strindberg’s Miss Julie
MUSIC COMPOSED BY Daniel and Matthew Pencer

Australian Exclusive/Premiere

THE TEMPERATURE NEVER STOPS RISING IN YAEL FARBER’S MIES JULIE, A PLAY FOR WHICH ‘SCORCHER’ IS WAY TOO MILD A DESCRIPTION. INSPIRED. THERE IS MORE EROTIC HEAT GENERATED BY THE PLAY’S TWO CENTRAL CHARACTERS … THAN IN ANY PRODUCTION IN TOWN … SIMPLY ASTONISHING. THE NEW YORK TIMES

On a remote South African farm, a kitchen smoulders with brutality and tenderness. Julie, the daughter of the Afrikaans farm master, is dangerously drawn to John, one of her father’s servants, as a lifetime of nuanced and flirtatious advances explodes in a single evening of raw and intense emotion.

The visceral struggles of contemporary South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid are laid bare as this couple’s deadly attraction spirals out of control and they battle over power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land.

Following sell-out seasons in Edinburgh, London and New York, this explosive new adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic gets straight to the story’s dark, steamy heart to reveal theatre at its most potent and beautiful.
