Soon after a furtive, daring kiss between two elderly women was witnessed in a supermarket, this Irish theatrical jewel was born. I ? ALICE ? I tells in absorbing documentary style the tender and courageous story of Alice Kinsella and Alice Slattery.
Dublin’s HotForTheatre faces a contemporary social topic in a beguiling, joyous performance that blurs real life with theatre, winning the applause and smiles of audiences from Reykjavík, Iceland to Manhattan, New York.
From the comfort of their cosily domestic lounge-room both Alices, hesitantly, almost reluctantly at first, tell of the circumstances of their “very, very discreet” relationship – religion, menopause, Dusty Springfield, infidelity, coming out – in an intimate and frank conversation from the stage.
In its praise, The Irish Times says of writer-director Amy Conroy: “Conroy has her cake, eats it and shares it with her audience.”
HotForTheatre was formed in 2010 to provoke, move and delight audiences in equal measures. This, the company’s first production, won the Fishamble Award for New Writing for Amy Conroy and the Best Female Performance Award for Clare Barrett at the 2010 Dublin Fringe Festival.
This is compelling, fresh Irish theatre which tells an uplifting story of finding acceptance within ourselves and our community.
