“The evidence of our violence is everywhere we turn… murder, suspicion, treachery, destruction… so how can I sit here in front of you and claim people… all of us… are fundamentally good?” (Excerpt from As We Forgive)
Two of Tasmania’s eminent theatre practitioners, Robert Jarman and Tom Holloway, come together in this absorbing premiere production about the motives, the methods and the meaning of forgiveness.
This solo play has been written by Tom Holloway especially for Robert Jarman and is directed by the award-winning Julian Meyrick. The show presents the bravura Jarman in the roles of three solitary men who are injured yet enduring, grieving yet gregarious, and who must each confront the fact and act of forgiveness in their lives.
Jarman, well remembered for his acclaimed performance in I Am My Own Wife, juggles the anguish of his different characters in different yet linked circumstances, accompanied on stage by a lone cellist. Holloway, whose writing shines for its subtlety, integrity and grace, is a multi-award-winning playwright and his work has been performed in the Gate Theatre and Hampstead Theatre in London.
The play, commissioned by Tasmania Performs, has been selected as part of the “Collected Works Australia 2013” for the Centenary of Canberra celebrations, after its national debut during Ten Days.
As We Forgive is a searing investigation of contemporary morality in language both implacable and sparse.
The best of Tasmanian theatre.
