OTHELLO

Presented by State Theatre Company of South Australia
By William Shakespeare

O beware my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on

Combining a vivid depiction of racial struggle, the fog of war, and the thin frontiers that separate love and jealousy, vengeance and forgiveness, Othello is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies.

Othello, newly married to Desdemona, who is half his age, is appointed leader of a military operation to defend Cyprus from the Turks. Iago, his ensign, passed over for promotion in favour of young Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. And thus the violent engine of jealousy is set in motion…

An adrenaline-fuelled take on one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies, this production will see State Theatre Company Artistic Associate Nescha Jelk make her Dunstan Playhouse debut. 2013’s brilliant Dromio twins from The Comedy of Errors, Hazem Shammas and Renato Musolino, will plumb their darker depths to bring to life one of Shakespeare’s most compelling and destructive pairings, the tragically misguided Othello and cynically destructive Iago.
